Arian Band is one of the most successful and influential Iranian pop bands formed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Founded in 1998 by Ali Pahlavan and Payam Salehi, the group played a pivotal role in reshaping Iran’s post-revolution pop music landscape.
A major milestone of the band was featuring both male and female vocalists and musicians on stage—a first for pop music in post-1979 Iran, which helped pave the way for greater female representation in live performances.
In 2000, Arian released its debut album, Gole Aftabgardoon (The Sunflower), which became a massive hit and the best-selling album of the year. The band developed a signature sound in 2000s Iranian music by blending Persian melodic sensibilities with modern Western pop structures and upbeat rhythms.
A notable highlight of their international career was a 2007 collaboration with renowned British-Irish singer Chris de Burgh on the track “The Words I Love You” (Doostet Daram). The project marked one of the first official joint works between a major Western artist and an Iranian pop group since the 1979 Revolution.
Arian also gained international recognition through a nomination for the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music and extensive concert tours across Canada, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Although the group stopped its activities in the early 2010s due to ongoing problems, mounting pressure and regulatory restrictions, Arian remains a pioneering force that redefined modern pop music in Iran.
